DesignWare® IP
IBM PowerPC 4xx Star IP Cores

Synopsys, in partnership with IBM, offers a complete set of products and services to architect, design, and verify SoC systems built using the PowerPC 460-S and PowerPC 405-S cores in the designer's choice of process technology to meet performance, power, cost and/or other key design objectives. The Synopsys/IBM solution creates the opportunity for the Power Architecture to be applied to a broad range of new applications.

Synopsys and IBM offer firm and synthesizable, process-portable versions of the PowerPC 460 (460-S) and PowerPC 405 (405-S) through the DesignWare Star IP program. Working with IBM, Synopsys Professional Services re-designed the original 460 and 405 designs to make them fully synthesizable and re-designed the processor's cache memory system to replace custom-designed memories with commonly available on-chip SRAM components. These new designs eliminate major cost and design barriers and make the Power Architecture available to all SoC designers independent of the process technology they choose to use. Both IBM and Synopsys have verified that these design changes maintain full compatibility with the PowerPC specification and existing implementations. These changes allow the PowerPC cores, CoreConnect peripherals, and the vast body of PowerPC software to be integrated with other application-specific logic on an SoC to create products and applications that have not previously used the Power Architecture.

coreKits
Synopsys provides "Design View" coreKits, sufficient to design and verify a PowerPC-based design, at no additional charge to DesignWare Library or VCS Verification Library customers. These "Design Views" include simulation and timing models, plus documentation on the cores. "Implementation View" coreKits, which include the actual RTL, implementation scripts, etc., are required in order to physically implement the design, and are available for licensing from Synopsys and from IBM. Upon completion of the an "Implementation View" license agreement, Synopsys or IBM will provide the "Implementation View "coreKits to the licensee. An "Implementation View" coreKit packages the required PowerPC RTL, go/no-go verification suite and required design tool scripts in a complete and consistent package. The coreKit makes installation easy and quickly guides designers to optimized results in their choice of process technology. The resulting design achieves high ATPG test coverage and maintains cycle-for-cycle compatibility with the existing process-specific designs (i.e., hard cores) utilizing custom design methodologies.

Peripherals
PowerPC Star IP coreKits provide additional IP to bridge between the CoreConnect and AMBA AHB on-chip-bus architectures. This allows designers to mix and match existing IP blocks from both CoreConnect and AMBA environments in their SoC designs. Synopsys also offers a broad range of AMBA-compatible IP products, minimizing the time required to design and verify a complete Power Architecture based subsystem.

Verification
The Synopsys coreKits also utilize verification IP and testbenches for both the processor and the subsystems built around the processor. The included testbench validates the primary functionality of the PowerPC core, CoreConnect-to-AHB bridge, and CoreConnect peripheral blocks, and monitors transactions on the CoreConnect PLB bus.

System-Level Design
In addition to the PowerPC DesignWare Star IP components, Synopsys provides SystemC models for the PowerPC processors and a broad range of CoreConnect peripherals through the DesignWare System-Level Library, allowing system level designers to explore high-level architectural alternatives and analyze the performance and functionality of their designs. Usage of these SystemC models also allows the creation of a virtual platform for pre-RTL system software development while the SoC is still being designed and built.

Design Services
On top of the IP products, Synopsys Professional Services provides design services to customers using the PowerPC products. With significant experience in Power Architecture based designs, Synopsys Professional Services has been directly involved in implementing the process-portable versions of the PowerPC 460-S and PowerPC 405-S, providing intimate knowledge of the architecture.

Community Recognition
The Synopsys PowerPC solution was recognized with IBM's 2006 Beacon Award as "The Best IBM Power Architecture Solution". Synopsys was nominated for this award by a customer who, with Synopsys Professional Services assistance, implemented a PowerPC-based design in a special process technology while realizing both schedule and project cost improvements. The cycle-for-cycle compatability of the synthesized PowerPC core delivered in the DesignWare Star IP coreKit allowed the customer to run existing software without modifications, reducing total system development time.
