How are metalenses and surface relief grating designs impacted by manufacturing limitations? Photonics devices have been manufactured using Integrated Circuit (IC) manufacturing technology for decades, running at lower volumes – hundreds to a few thousand wafers annually – because the tools and methods accounted for manufacturing limitations. These same tools are not necessarily applicable to photonics devices. To keep pace with demand for consumer optical devices such as cell phones and sensing cameras, as well as AR/VR/MR devices that include metalenses, optical combiners, and micro imaging projectors, manufacturing volumes for such components will have to accelerate to match high-volume manufacturing. Maryvonne Chalony was born in France. She received a M.S. Degree in Physics from the Univ. of Nice in 2006, and a Ph.D. degree in Atomic Physics from the Univ. of Nice in 2010. She has, since then, been an application engineer on photonic design software at LightTec SARL. In November 2020, LightTec was acquired by Synopsys, inc. and is now part of the Optical Solutions Group (OSG) at Synopsys. Maryvonne now moves to Application Engineer on RSoft Photonics Device Tools products.
