Overview

Arbe is a pioneer in the development of next-generation imaging radar systems for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles. Headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel, and founded in 2015 by a team of semiconductor engineers, radar specialists, and data scientists, Arbe has redefined the role of radar in vehicle sensor suites. Their patented chipset solution offers ultra-high-resolution imaging that enhances road safety by delivering precise, real-time data regardless of environmental conditions. Arbe partnered with Synopsys to acquire high-quality automotive IP for the GLOBALFOUNDRIES 22FDX process, expediting their time-to-market while fulfilling stringent safety and security requirements.

Challenges

Arbe faced several critical challenges in developing their cutting-edge imaging radar chipset:
  • Developing Innovative Imaging Radar Chipset: Arbe needed to develop a high-resolution imaging radar chipset with cutting-edge features to meet the current automotive level 2 market demands and future autonomous vehicle requirements.
  • Reducing Costs: The goal was to lower the cost of their new high-resolution sensor SoC without compromising on quality or performance.
  • Acquiring Fully Qualified IP: Arbe required fully qualified IP on GlobalFoundries 22FDX to accelerate time-to-market while meeting stringent AEC-Q100 and ISO 26262 standards.
  • Implementing Efficient Security Solutions: Ensuring secure system boot-up and network communication was crucial to meet industry standards and protect sensitive data.

Solution

To address these challenges, Arbe selected a comprehensive portfolio of automotive-ready DesignWare IP from Synopsys. Key components of the solution included:

  • ARC EM22FS Processor: Integrated self-checking safety monitor, error-correcting code (ECC), and programmable watchdog timer.
  • EV62 Embedded Vision Processor: Provided a highly efficient 512-bit wide SIMD vector DSP with functional safety capabilities, without compromising power, area, and performance.
  • ARC MetaWare EV Development Toolkit for Safety: Enabled software developers to generate highly efficient, ISO 26262-compliant code for automotive applications.
  • Ethernet QoS Controller IP: Supported Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) to manage data streams reliably between connected devices.
  • General Purpose IOs and LVDS Libraries: Met stringent ESD targets and provided higher performance and increased drive strengths.
  • Security IP: True Random Number Generator, Security Protocol Accelerator, and Public Key Accelerator for robust, easy-to-integrate security features.

Results

Arbe achieved remarkable success by integrating Synopsys' DesignWare IP solutions:

  • First-Pass Silicon Success: Arbe successfully achieved first-silicon success, outpacing competitors in the market for 4D ultra high-resolution imaging radar.
  • Performance & ESD Requirements Met: The solution met stringent performance and ESD requirements, ensuring reliability and safety.
  • Accelerated Time-to-Market: Fully qualified IP helped accelerate ISO 26262 qualification, reducing development time.
