Course Description

Automotive head-up displays (HUDs) are used to display information to the driver without diverting the driver’s attention from the roadway. The information is projected to the windshield using a special projector called a picture generation unit under the dashboard, so the driver sees a virtual image in front of the car. While automotive HUDs are currently available in some higher end cars, the technology is rapidly evolving, and augmented reality could soon be used to further enhance the HUD experience. HUDs will be a common feature in most vehicles in the future.

This course covers LightTools features used for a typical HUD analysis and uses a dual-mirror HUD system for examples. The following LightTools features are covered in detail in this training.

  • Luminance analysis with backward simulation
  • Ray path analysis for ghost and stray light
  • Virtual image rendering and scenery
  • Reference rays
  • Sun loading analysis
  • Eye discomfort analysis
  • Processing model geometry
  • Converting CAD surfaces to native geometry
  • Adding thickness to single-surface objects

Who Should Attend:

This course is for current LightTools users who want to expand their effectiveness analyzing HUD systems using LightTools capabilities.

General familiarity of LightTools is assumed for this course. If you are a novice user, we recommend that you complete the LightTools Foundation course prior to attending this course. For current users, you can find self-guided training resources on SolvNetPlus (Article Detail (synopsys.com).
