How Process Design Kits Streamline Photonic IC Development

In the semiconductor industry, process design kits (PDKs) have long been used to model the fabrication process for the design tools used for an electrical IC. The same approach can be applied to photonic integrated circuits, bridging the gap between the foundry technology and design requirements. PDKs can also accelerate the process toward first-pass chip success. Read on for more insights into how PDKs can help you accelerate your photonic IC design process.

New Releases Available

On December 13, 2022, we released version 2022.06-1 of Synopsys OptoCompiler, Synopsys OptSim Elite and Synopsys Photonic Device Compiler, as well as version 2022.09-1 of the RSoft Photonic Device Tools.

OptoCompiler version 2022.06-1 release highlights:

  • Single segment flexConnectors now consistently give a warning when the subgrid offset of the connecting ports is misaligned
  • Update Photonic Pin no longer breaks when a pin has multiple shapes
  • Error related to Primewave job classes resolved
  • Various stability fixes

OptSim Elite version 2022.06-1 release highlights:

  • Support for equation-based optical S-matrix models
  •  Support for equation-based and parametric-file-based voltage transfer equations in electro-absorption modulator (EAM) model
  •  New blocks for separate photodetector responsivity, noise, and frequency response models
  •  New 1x1 and 2x1 optical expression operator blocks
  •  Support for mixed-domain EO-cosim-based PDK models
  •  Multi-channel support in EO co-simulation
  •  Support for current-out-of-range warnings for Laser Lookup model
  •  Miscellaneous bug fixes and improvements

RSoft Photonic Device Tools

The RSoft Photonic Device Tools 2022.09-1 release delivers enhanced integration with Sentaurus TCAD to increase the usability and performance advantage of the Synopsys design flow for optoelectronic devices such as phase shifters, photodetectors, and CMOS image sensors. Enhancements include:

  • Application-specific wizard to jumpstart new projects
  • Support for the direct use of Workbench variables (@ expressions) in RSoft CAD project scripts
  • Optical designs can be individually opened for each experiment to view the geometry and project settings, or to run optical simulations asynchronously from the Workbench flow
  • New CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) example

In addition, MetaOptic Designer, Synopsys’ unique inverse-design tool for quickly and efficiently designing and simulating metalenes and metasurfaces, offers new capabilities:

  • Can include lenses designed in Synopsys’ CODE V imaging design software
  • Faster performance with more granular option/output controls
  • Improved plotting, lens visualization, and material support

Photonic Device Compiler

  • Updates to Alchemy to provide more control over callbacks and improved error checking of port and parameter names
  • The Sentaurus TCAD improvements listed for the RSoft Photonic Device Tools are also available in Photonic Device Compiler
