Course Description

This course is designed for current LightTools users who want to perform specialized analysis, create flexible geometry, and use macros to automate LightTools. The course emphasizes hands-on computer workshop sessions.

The course begins with a review of using Visual Basic for Applications to write macros to control LightTools and retrieve simulation results.

In this course, you will learn about:

  • Data Manipulation and Analysis using Macros
  • Ray Propagation and Sensitivity Analysis
  • Improving Simulation Efficiency with Backward and Hybrid Ray Tracing
  • Tools for Color Analysis
  • Building Custom Geometry
  • Tolerance Analysis
  • And more!

Course Information

  • Attendees must use their own laptop with the latest Version of LightTools installed.
  • Laptops must have one of the following COM-enabled applications installed as a PC application (if using a Mac, the application must be running as a Windows® application):
    • Microsoft® Excel®
    • Python
    • MATLAB
  • Users should have Administrator privileges on the PC. For additional information, please see the LightTools hardware/operating system requirements.

Who Should Attend?
In this intermediate to advanced level course, you’ll learn tools for interfacing with LightTools with other data analysis software tool like MATLAB or Python, backwards and hybrid ray trace modes, color analysis, building customized geometry, tolerance analysis and more.

Registration and Fees

The fee for this short course is $1,000/€1,000. Please note that attendees must have their own laptops with the latest version of LightTools installed.

Attendance is limited, though minimum enrollments must be met. Pre-registration with payment must be made at least three weeks before the start of the courses. The fee is refundable up to that point. (A $200/€200 fee is charged for later cancellations.)

Course Instructors

Mary Kate Crawford, Ph.D. is a Senior Application Engineer in Customer Service. Dr. Crawford provides technical support for both LightTools and CODE V and has over 15 years optical design experience.

Mali Maliyagoda is a Senior Optical Engineer/Technical Consultant in Customer Service. Mr. Maliyagoda provides technical support for LightTools and has over 10 years’ experience in illumination design. 

Craig Pansing is a Lead CAE with over 10 years of experience. He provides technical support for CODE V and LightTools.

Cyrille Pornin is a Senior Application Engineer with over 10 years of experience. He is serving as an LightTools expert helping and training diverse industries.

Julien Goechnahts is a Senior Application Engineer in Munich, Germany for the Optical Solutions Group. He is an expert in the field of light simulation and its applications in a range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, and general lighting.

Zachar Krumer, Ph.D. is an application engineer, who provides technical support for LightTools, LucidShape and LucidShape CAA. He collected 10 years of optical design experience in solar energy and the automotive field.

Quentin Kuperman is the Applications Engineering Manager for the Optical Solutions Group with over 10 years of experience.  He specializes in Optical Scattering and LightTools but is also skilled in CODE V.
